Washington, D.C., February 26, 2013—St. Mary’s Center, a nursing home in Harlem for people living with HIV and AIDS, has received the highest possible overall rating of five stars in U.S. News & World Report’s fifth annual Best Nursing Homes, available exclusively at http://www.usnews.com/best-nursing-homes.

The Best Nursing Homes 2013 ratings highlight the top nursing homes in each city and state, out of nearly 16,000 facilities nationwide. U.S. News’s goal is to help users find a home with a strong track record of good care.

Best Nursing Homes draws on data from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, a federal agency that assesses homes in three categories—health inspections, level of nurse staffing, and quality of care—and gives each an overall rating.

U.S. News awarded the “Best Nursing Home” designation to homes that earned an overall rating of five stars from CMS in January 2013.

“With the support and leadership of our governing body, our residents, their families and our staff have formed a powerful and cohesive partnership to ensure that the highest and most appropriate care is delivered. We are proud to have this recognition and will strive to continue to serve the communities affected with HIV/AIDS,” explained Holly Argent Tariq, CEO, St. Mary’s Center.

Along with the ratings, U.S. News has published a series of articles and a step-by-step video to guide users in choosing the right nursing home. The articles and ratings are exclusive to the website and aren’t expected to appear in print.

“Fewer than one out of every five nursing homes got an overall rating of five stars,” said Avery Comarow, U.S. News Health Rankings Editor. “All seniors deserve the best nursing care available, and these are homes that merit their consideration by demonstrating such high quality.”

Since 1992, St. Mary’s Center Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF) has provided quality medical care and social services to people living with AIDS in Harlem and New York City. Our 40-bed facility provides bilingual resident-centered individualized care ensuring residents find a comfortable home-like environment where they can concentrate on their health and well being under the care of compassionate doctors, nurses, therapists and social workers.

Our goal is to assist our residents in regaining their health so that they may live independently again. We also operate an adjoining adult day health care program so when our residents are healthy enough to leave the nursing home, we can still support them in their daily health management and maintenance. St. Mary’s Center is LGBTQI-friendly and non-denominational.

THE MYTH THAT “MINORITIES” GET MORE SCHOLARSHIPS...

girljanitor:

THE MYTH THAT “MINORITIES” GET MORE SCHOLARSHIPS DEBUNKED SINCE 5EVER

This is something that comes up time and time again like clockwork. Here’s a”just the facts” post.

Racists LOVE this tired old saw. The problem is that it’s complete and utter bullshit, it always HAS been, and IT IS THE OPPOSITE OF REALITY.

Caucasian students receive more than three-quarters (76%) of all institutional merit-based scholarship and grant funding, even though they represent less than two-thirds (62%) of the student population.
Caucasian students are 40% more likely to win private scholarships than minority students. These statistics demonstrate that, as a whole, private sector scholarship programs tend to perpetuate historical inequities in the distribution of scholarships according to race.

-The Distribution of Grants and Scholarships by Race

BUT WHAT ABOUT FINANCIAL NEED BASED SCHOLARSHIPS????

OH HEY IS THERE ANOTHER SOURCE FOR THIS?

It debunks the race myth, which claims that minority students receive more than their fair share of scholarships. The reality is that minority students are less likely to win private scholarships or receive merit-based institutional grants than Caucasian students. Among undergraduate students enrolled full-time/full-year in Bachelor’s degree programs at four-year colleges and universities, minority students represent about a third of applicants but slightly more than a quarter of private scholarship recipients. Caucasian students receive more than three-quarters (76%) of all institutional merit-based scholarship and grant funding, even though they represent less than two-thirds (62%) of the student population. Caucasian students are 40% more likely to win private scholarships than minority students.

STOP PARROTING RACIST MYTHS INSTEAD OF ACTUALLY FACT CHECKING

Scholarships Go Disproportionately To White Students

Texas State Offers Scholarship EXCLUSIVELY FOR WHITE PEOPLE

One Million dollars’ Worth of White “Ethnic” Scholarships Don’t Trouble Student Group Protesting “Minority Scholarships

B-b-but what about the “Evils” Of Affirmative Action in Higher Education??? Oh yeah, WHITE WOMEN ARE THE #1 BENEFICIARIES OF AFFIRMATIVE ACTION.

So stop saying this shit. you’re just plain fucking WRONG. Also, racist.

CALIFORNIA LATINAS FOR REPRODUCTIVE JUSTICE (CLRJ) LAUNCHES A NEW WEBSITE AND COMMEMORATES SEVEN YEARS OF REPRODUCTIVE AND SEXUAL HEALTH AND RIGHTS ADVOCACY

(Los Angeles, CA) December 13, 2012— California Latinas for Reproductive Justice (CLRJ) has launched their new and improved website while simultaneously celebrating their seventh anniversary of reproductive justice leadership, action and advocacy for Latina/o communities.

The new www.californialatinas.org has an updated aesthetic, new features, and gives visitors a direct link to all of the organization’s social media outlets, including Flickr and a brand new blog. The new “Our Work” tab clearly shows the evolution of CLRJ’s policy, community mobilization and education, and research activities over the past seven years. While the reinvented website includes all of the information as the original site, there are added perks like our “News and Events” section to find out about upcoming events, trainings, mobilization and campaign opportunities, and an ever-present social media tab that allows visitors to connect and stay connected with CLRJ.

This latest website is key in highlighting CLRJ as an active leader in prioritizing the sexual and reproductive health needs of Latina/os. The new “Resources” tab centralizes their ongoing California policy analysis and research findings. Additional components include customized “Policy Advocacy Tools” that can be used to determine a specific California district’s legislator, links to find and follow California legislative bills, and tips on how to get involved in the policy process by educating legislators. It also links to CLRJ’s most recent research reports and policy briefs, which focus on the state of Latinas’ sexual health, and provide policy recommendations for legislators and community advocates.

“We are proud of the technological strides we have made this year with social media and our new and improved website and content management system. Now we have more autonomy and ability to share information and resources with our community and supporters,” said CLRJ’s Associate Director Nancy Sanchez.

CLRJ’s purpose and mission is easily accessible via the new website. New visitors can easily learn about the organization through the handy “About Us” section that includes a concise mission statement, a comprehensive “Herstory” and organization’s strategies in advancing a reproductive justice framework.

California Latinas for Reproductive Justice was founded in 2004 out of the statewide and national need for an organization for Latinas and by Latinas that gives a voice to the most pressing needs of Latina/o communities. Since 2005 when CLRJ began its operations, they have become a trusted and well-respected policy and advocacy organization, dedicated to Latinas’ reproductive and sexual health, rights and justice. Their mission focuses on Latina empowerment and community mobilization to create a movement that will change the policy process to better reflect the needs of not only Latinas, but also low-income women of color, and immigrant women and their communities.

— The New York Legal Assistance Group (NYLAG) has mobilized a “Storm Response Unit” to provide disaster relief for storm victims who now face an array of urgent legal issues. Since launching our program last Friday, we have been inundated with hundreds of requests for assistance. In order to handle this huge volume we are turning to our pro bono partners for help.

I think for me, just my publicity background has given me a knowledge of what that attention really means and how it was generated. My job was to generate attention, right? So I know what that is. It’s not about me. It’s something that is created or something that happens organically, and it doesn’t mean much beyond that moment. … And so it’s like, I’m thankful for my life in publicity. It gave me a late start. I’m not a whippersnapper out of film school. I made a midlife change to another career, but I definitely know that the things I learned from being a publicist in the industry is helping me enjoy this moment now.”

- Ava DuVernay on what she learned as a publicist (via nprfreshair)

"Searching for your passion is not proactive; it’s actually quite passive, because embedded in the..."

““Searching for your passion is not proactive; it’s actually quite passive, because embedded in the pursuit is the erroneous belief that when seen, it will be immediately recognized. If you feel..."

“
1. Surround yourself with people who are smarter than you and move out of their way.

If you feel like you know everything, you’re wrong. I know what I don’t know and then I find partners who can teach me. A perfect example is my partnership with Patrick Whitesell, my co-CEO at WME. While we take on different roles at the company and focus on different things, we share the same goals and at the end of the day, we’re working toward the same end. That’s been the key to our success.

2. The only constant in business is change. Get comfortable with it.

When I started in the business, there were four broadcast networks and 19 cable networks. Now there are five broadcast networks, 117 cable networks, Netflix, Hulu, YouTube, HBOGo, iTunes, Amazon Prime, VOD – the list goes on and on. Next year there will be more distribution platforms, and in ten years the landscape will have shifted another 180 degrees. The business is changing quickly, and the only way to succeed is to change with it. I always tell my colleagues, there is no such thing as a traditional talent agent anymore. It’s about pushing beyond that 10% commission and finding opportunity where it didn’t exist before.

3. Fail often, fail quickly.

Nobody fucks up like I do, but you’ll never succeed unless you take risks. Big ones. In 2009, we took Endeavor, a company that was doing incredibly well, and merged it with the oldest talent agency in the world. From a cultural and organizational standpoint, it was a big risk. People had their doubts. But we had a vision and a lot of help from very smart people (see #1.) Three years later, our business is stronger, our bench is deeper and smarter, and our deal-making is more innovative. It’s a better company – period. You have to lead by example if you want to promote a culture where risk-taking is rewarded.

4. Your schedule makes you dumber.

Force yourself outside of your daily schedule. Be curious and take time to learn about worlds outside of the one you live in. Watch the news, read the paper, educate yourself. Don’t be afraid to call people you don’t know, start a conversation, and ask for things you need. At the very least, you’ll be more interesting. At the most, you’ll take your business in new and bigger directions.

5. You only get one shot – make it count.

I learned this the painful way. After being hit by a car and lying face-down in the middle of Wilshire Boulevard, I was confronted with a whole lot more than my mortality. Take advantage of each day that’s given to you and do something to move the needle on your business, even if it’s just an inch. You’ve heard it before, but life is not a dress rehearsal. Don’t waste your time (or mine.)

6. Good ideas rule all.

In the end, it’s all about creative ideas and content – it’s the lifeblood of our business. I’m fortunate enough to work with the writers, directors, musicians and actors who are defining culture with their voices. It’s why I come to work in the morning. In 100 years, when the world looks different, and we communicate in new ways, and we have more devices and platforms and distribution methods, I believe great artistry will still matter most.
”

-
The latest addition our archive of advice: six lessons to live by from William Morris Endeavor CEO Ari Emanuel.

Complement with some sage advice on knowing when (not) to take advice.

(LinkedIn is apparently trying to get in the content publishing business by asking various public figures to write listicles of business and personal productivity advice.
